He was born on 27 May 1971 in New South Wales and he is the son of Kevin and Lynne. Carey was one of five children who grew up in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales. His mother and father separated when Carey was aged six, with his mother taking four of the children to Adelaide, living in a homeless shelter.
Carey began to play rugby league as a junior and began playing Australian Rules football at the age of eight. At the age of 13, he returned to Adelaide, and attended The Heights School and played junior football for North Adelaide.
