Robert Dickerson Wiki and Bio:

He was born on March 30, 1924 and was a self-taught artist who refused to go to art school. His art has been described as angular and high contrast chiaroscuro and executed in a range of materials including paint, pastels, charcoals and other graphic media.

He was painting almost until his death of cancer. Mr Bacon said that he included some of Mr Dickerson’s recent works in the exhibition. One work from the 70s was sold for $180,000, a record for the artist.

He was a professional boxer and coal shoveller, only becoming a full-time artist in his middle years. He shot to prominence when together with Melbourne-based painters such as Charles Blackman, John Percival, Clifton Pugh and Arthur Boyd.

He lived in Nowra on the NSW South coast, swam every day and worked in his studio although recently he had switched to charcoal and pastel rather than oil.

This is a great loss… God Bless his soul..
