When the Indian selection committee meets to select the team for the upcoming series against Bangladesh on Thursday, the issue of captain Virat Kohli’s assignment will be a matter of discussion while Sanju Samson can be included as a cover for Rishabh Pant.
India has played 56 matches in all formats since October 2018, out of which Kohli has played in 48. However, the selection committee will leave the decision to Kohli whether he wants a break or to continue.
There is a serious discussion about Mumbai’s rising all-rounder Shivam Dubey who could be selected in place of the all-rounder in place of injured Hardik Pandya.
Apart from the three-match T20 series that starts in New Delhi from November 3, Bangladesh will play two Test matches (Indore and Kolkata) under the World Championship.
Samson recently scored a double century for Kerala in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, after his pant is expected to be selected as the second option.
A BCCI official, on the condition of anonymity, said, “If both Rishabh and Sanju are in the team, then there will be no problem. These two have also played together in IPL. Rishabh has got limited success in the short format but looking at the future we need to feed him. ”
He said, “Also Sanju has the ability to change the attitude of the match. Keeping the World T20 in mind, the team management also needs to look at other options as everyone knows that now is the time to look ahead of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. ”
If Kohli is not in the team then Samson is being seen as a ‘back-up’ batsman but it will be interesting to see if Manish Pandey can retain his place in the team.
Mumbai all-rounder Shivam Dubey has defeated Vijay Shankar in the second option of the all-rounder in the shorter format. The source said, “Everyone agrees that Shivam’s bowling is not yet of international standard and he is not even close to Hardik’s variety. But he is a left-handed player which is a positive thing and he can hit big sixes. ”
Wrist spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal are not expected to be selected as Rahul Chahar and Washington Sundar are sure to get another chance.
Lokesh Rahul is likely to retain his place in the team after a good performance in the Hazare Trophy.
Veteran opener batsman Shikhar Dhawan is in poor form but the selectors can probably continue him in another series. Mayank Agarwal can be a substitute for reserve opener if he is dropped.
Deepak Chahar, Navdeep Saini and Khalil Aham are expected to be the three main fast bowlers.
